Marie Rogers Gilbert was born in 1924 in Florence, S.C. In 1946, she married Richard A. Gilbert, a finance officer for the Air Force. In 1952, as an Air Force reservist, Richard A. Gilbert was called up for duty in the Korean War and served in an account-auditor in Seoul, Korea. The Gilberts had two children, R. Austin Gilbert Jr. and Laurence (Laurie) Gilbert.
